What was behind the 1200% increase of American and United Airlines ‘shorting’ just days before the 9-11 attacks, reported by the Chicago Securities Exchange? Shorting is a bet that the price of a stock is going to go down, usually by purchasing ‘put’ options. Put volume right before 9-11 was the highest ever recorded.
The instant the Towers were hit, American and United puts exploded in price, with tens of millions of dollars exchanging hands in seconds. Put options on United Airlines rose from $0.90 to $12.00. According to the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and London Independent, a large share of those puts were traced to Deutsche Bank/AB Brown, the largest bank in Europe. The bank’s former manager, A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard (known in the US Senate to be connected with drug money-laundering), left the bank in 1998 to become the director of the CIA. Any prior knowledge of the attacks would have been very profitable to CIA insiders. It’s been documented that the CIA has long enjoyed a close relationship with Wall Street, e.g., in monitoring unusual trading patterns, ostensibly to ‘warn of terrorist attacks.’ Put profits in one account rose to $2.5 million and is still unclaimed.
Duped patriots might argue that well-connected Muslims made these trades. Is this plausible? Perhaps. But there’s no way of knowing. Congress refused to investigate, and the 9/11 Commission dismissed the unprecedented put volume as unimportant.
