(Since 1975, 17,000 ancient tablets and fragments have been discovered in Northern Syria. Known as the Ebla Tablets (c. 2,400 BC), they confirm the names of many Old Testament Patriarchs, locations and cities, including Sodom and Gomorrah.)
In 1748, the ancient city of Pompeii (destroyed in 79 AD by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius) was discovered in present day Italy under 20 feet of volcanic ash and stone. On one building the words “Sodom and Gomorra” can be seen etched into a fresco. Perhaps a long ago traveling Jew saw Pompeii as a parallel with Sodom and Gomorrah.
